RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC)

£109.00

Learn how to use your marine VHF radio safely and legally with the RYA Short Range Certificate. This one-day course covers essential radio procedures, emergency calls, and hands-on practice — we prefer to offer this course in a classroom environment but is available online.

Description

If you have a VHF radio fitted on your boat — or even carry a handheld set while kayaking or paddleboarding — you are legally required to hold an MCA operator’s licence.

A marine radio is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment on board, and knowing how to use it correctly could make all the difference in an emergency. The RYA Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum legal qualification needed to operate VHF and VHF DSC (Digital Selective Calling) radios on any British-flagged vessel, whether fixed or handheld.

Our RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate course is a one-day training programme for anyone who wants to use a marine VHF radio confidently and correctly. Choose to study online or in the classroom — whichever suits your schedule best.

Course contents:

  • Basics of radio operation
  • Frequencies
  • Distress
  • Emergency and medical assistance procedures
  • Making ship to shore telephone calls
  • Digital Selective Calling
  • Global Maritime Distress Safety System

You’ll learn how to operate marine radios, send and receive messages clearly, and follow the correct emergency, urgency, and routine calling procedures. The course includes hands-on radio practice so you’ll feel prepared and confident out on the water. And how other Radio and satellite safety equipment works and the licenses you need.

The MCA exam can be done on the day, and is a additional cost of £76.00
